Russell Nelson

MARVEL, Colo. - Mr. Russell W. Nelson, 68, of Marvel, Colo., formerly of Galesburg, died at 3:35 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 8, 2009) in Mercy Regional Medical Center, Durango, Colo. 

He was born July 17, 1940, in Galesburg, the son of Leo G. and Elsie "Peg" Allison Nelson. He married Vivienne A "Toni" Major on June 30, 2001, in Marvel. She survives. 
Also surviving are four sons, Russell W. Nelson Jr. of Yorkville, Ill., Jon Nelson of Knoxville, Ill., Edwin (Dani) Nelson of Garden Grove, Calif. and Scott (Heather Weeks of O'Fallon, Mo.; two daughters, Candace (Leo) Simmons of Yorkville, and Melissa (Aaron) Hawn of Malo, Wash.; two stepdaughters, Patty Hernandez of Orange County, Calif. and Sheby Rowland of St. Charles, Mo.; one brother, Michael V. Nelson of Galesburg; a sister, Peggy Anderson of Galesburg; 19 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. 
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1960. 
He worked as an ironworker for Local 416 for 30 years in Los Angeles. He later worked as a history teacher and a coach. He then became an engineer working for H.D.R. Inc. in Omaha, Neb. He retired in September 2008. He graduated from Galesburg High School. He graduated from Western Illinois University in Macomb with his teaching degree. He was a leader in the youth organization called "God Squad." He enjoyed farming and raising farm animals and traveling. He was a lay speaker for United Methodist Church in Marvel. 
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Jean Hembrough will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. Burial will be in Wataga Cemetery with military rites by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285
